The city announced Tuesday that the reopening means traffic will finally be free-flowing on Stockton between Geary and Ellis streets, a crucial corridor to the Bay Bridge and Interstate 80 from Chinatown. Bus riders can expect to save up to five minutes on trips between Chinatown and Visitacion Valley, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency. Merchants in the area have long complained that the construction on the tunnel running beneath their strip of Stockton Street has hampered sales and created nettlesome traffic snarls. In December, the city turned the two blocks of fresh asphalt into the annual Winter Walk.
