Here’s how one episode of ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ predicted meme culture - Alternative Press
Could you keep it down? It seems out of place because, to this point, SpongeBob has not shown any form of disdain towards Squidward. If anything, SpongeBob has mostly seemed scared or generally misunderstanding of Squidward. Then comes Larry the Lobster. He asks SpongeBob and Sandy if they want to lift some weights. Even before Larry asks this, SpongeBob feels a bit uncomfortable, like he knew exactly what Larry would ask.
In this episode, SpongeBob rips his pants, causing everyone to laugh. SpongeBob puts on a show by making silly sand sculptures, which make Sandy laugh. A muscular lobster named Larry comes and asks if they want to lift weights, which Sandy quickly accepts, while SpongeBob mopes behind them. When they arrive at the weight lifting area, Sandy lifts a bar weight and the crowd cheers.
This is a highly successful and long-running show, with humour that broadly appeals. This series has been running since Critics say the show has been declining in quality in the last few years, which is what critics also say of The Simpsons.
