While giving a series of guidelines on recording of evidence in rape cases by trial courts, a Bench comprising then Chief Justice S Rajendra Babu and Justice G P Mathur expressed its inability to enlarge the definition of rape saying such an exercise would "result in good deal of chaos and confusion and will not be in the interest of the society". A public interest litigation was filed by Sakshi, an organisation providing legal, medical, residential, psychological assistance to women, particularly those who are victims of any kind of sexual abuse.
