Clitoral hood reduction
Clitoral Hood Reduction Techniques | Plastic Surgery Key
CHR is a procedure that is often confounded with clitoral hood removal, clitoroplasty, clitoral unhooding, clitoral hoodectomy, clitoropexy, hoodoplasty, dorsal slit surgery, lysis of adhesions, and unhooding. In the context of this chapter, the hood is the prepuce of the clitoris and is analogous to the penile foreskin. I intentionally do not use the term circumcision, because it has negative connotations and is often confused with clitoral amputation. The hood is distinctly different from the clitoris, and I will refer to CHR exclusively without focusing on clitoral surgery. Information on the surgery and its sequelae is sparce; a literature search on CHR yielded only 13 results.
Clitoral Hood Reduction Techniques
John G. Aesthetic alteration of the genitalia is increasingly sought by women unhappy with the size, shape, and appearance of their vulva. Although the labia minora are usually the focus of concern, the entire anatomic region—minora, labia majora, clitoral hood, perineum, and mons pubis—should be evaluated in a preoperative assessment of women seeking labiaplasty. Labiaplasty is associated with high patient satisfaction and low complication rates. The three basic labia minora reduction techniques—edge excision, wedge excision, and central deepithelialization—as well as their advantages and disadvantages are discussed to assist the surgeon in tailoring technique selection to individual genital anatomy and aesthetic desires.
The term "vaginal rejuvenation" covers several different cosmetic procedures for female genitalia, such as labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. Excess folds of the clitoral hood, or prepuce, can be reduced with a clitoral hood reduction. The procedure is most commonly done along with a labiaplasty. The extra folds can create a bulge that is exaggerated when the labia minora are reduced, and a clitoral hood reduction can improve the balance in appearance of the female genitalia. A clitoral hood reduction is usually done at the time of a labiaplasty under either local anesthesia with oral sedation or under general anesthesia.
