The report, by United States-based consultants Secure Computing, said Niue and Tonga provide addresses for almost as many pornographic web pages as the whole of Asia and Latin America. It alleges that Niue hosts 2,9-million pornographic pages, while The Netherlands has only 1,9-million. Most of the modern Pacific is deeply religious and bans the import and ownership of pornography.

It's a status that Tongans view as ironic since their government late last year used the excuse that it wanted to set a high moral and Christian national code of conduct when it amended the Tongan Constitution to suppress the local print media. The release this week of the first global study on web porn publishing in countries claimed Tonga's. The report, made by the Secure Computing Corporation, was the first study of the global distribution of pornographic web pages by the top individual country domains. While there is no academic research focusing on PNG's internet porn habits, the situation in other parts of the world suggests conservative Christian values might actually be driving the desire for pornography. A study published in scientific journal The Lancet found 59 per cent of PNG men had raped their partner and 41 per cent had raped a woman who was not their partner. But Dr Flood said pornography was by no means the only cause of sexual violence, especially in a country like PNG.
