China is not considering recognizing same-sex marriage, a spokesman for the People's Republic parliament said on Wednesday, highlighting just how much of an uphill battle the LGBTQ community faces advocating for gay rights in Asia. Zang Tiewei, spokesman for parliament's legal affairs commission, said at a news briefing that Chinese law only recognizes marriages between opposite sex couples, and that it will stay that way, Reuters reported. While some legislators in China have proposed measures to recognize same-sex relationships over the years, they have not been successful. Tiewei's comments also come just months after Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage, a first in Asia.
