The report illustrates that bisexual people experience alarming rates of invisibility, societal rejection, violence, discrimination, and poor physical and mental health—often at rates higher than their lesbian and gay peers. Heron Greenesmith, Esq. This report should serve as a clarion call to policymakers and service providers across the country: In order to fully serve the LGBT community, we must also fully serve the bisexual community. Within the bi community itself, there is substantial diversity as well. The erasure of bisexual people and their experiences leads to a variety of negative consequences, including lack of social or legal support systems, psychological difficulties pertaining to alienation or lack of belonging, and more. Bisexual Microaggressions in Medical Contexts
Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction , or sexual behavior toward both males and females, or to more than one sex or gender. The term bisexuality is mainly used in the context of human attraction to denote romantic or sexual feelings toward both men and women, and the concept is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation along with heterosexuality and homosexuality , all of which exist on the heterosexual—homosexual continuum. A bisexual identity does not necessarily equate to equal sexual attraction to both sexes; commonly, people who have a distinct but not exclusive sexual preference for one sex over the other also identify themselves as bisexual. Scientists do not know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorize that it is caused by a complex interplay of genetic , hormonal , and environmental influences , and do not view it as a choice. Bisexuality has been observed in various human societies and elsewhere in the animal kingdom throughout recorded history.
Make no mistake, gay and lesbian people have more positive attitudes toward bisexual women and men compared to heterosexuals. However, they harbor more negativity toward bisexuals than toward other gay men and lesbian women, and they endorse more bi-negativity than do bisexuals or other sexual minorities including those who identify as asexual , queer, and pansexual. So, why are many lesbians so anti-bi? A new study recently published in the journal Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity suggests that this might be due to what the researchers call the androcentric desire hypothesis : The fact that people gay men and lesbians alike perceive bisexuals as being more sexually attracted to men than they are to women. In both cases, the sexuality of bisexual women and men appears to be perceived as oriented toward men.
