ORLANDO Central Florida activist Sarah Wissig came out of the closet as bisexual 10 years ago and in that time she has become concerned over the lack of bisexual representation within the community. The lack of bisexual representation concerned Wissig but it became all the more surprising to her when she started to look into the statistics of bisexuality as it relates to the rest of the LGBTQ community. Wissig hopes that the new organization can help dispel some of the enduring stereotypes about bisexuals that she has seen perpetrated within the community itself. Wissig first hopes to increase the visibility of OBA, and the community as a whole. The next meeting will be on Aug.
Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction , or sexual behavior toward both males and females, [1] [2] [3] or to more than one sex or gender. The term bisexuality is mainly used in the context of human attraction to denote romantic or sexual feelings toward both men and women, [1] [2] [3] and the concept is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation along with heterosexuality and homosexuality , all of which exist on the heterosexual—homosexual continuum. A bisexual identity does not necessarily equate to equal sexual attraction to both sexes; commonly, people who have a distinct but not exclusive sexual preference for one sex over the other also identify themselves as bisexual. Scientists do not know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorize that it is caused by a complex interplay of genetic , hormonal , and environmental influences , [9] [10] [11] and do not view it as a choice. Bisexuality has been observed in various human societies [16] and elsewhere in the animal kingdom [17] [18] [19] throughout recorded history. The term bisexuality , however, like the terms hetero- and homosexuality , was coined in the 19th century.

Maynard-Harris wants to get the information out there so that all year round—not just in the month of October—women know what the risk factors are and how susceptible an individual is to getting breast cancer, and she is doing that with a grant from The Contingo Fund. One of the primary issues Maynard-Harris wants to educate women in the community on is that lesbians have a higher risk of getting breast cancer in their lifetime than their heterosexual counterparts.
